Best Places To Live In The South West (Cornwall)

If you’re looking for the best places to live in the South West, look no further. The Sunday Times has named Frome in Somerset as the ‘Best Place To Live In The South West 2018’, whilst also highlighting other excellent locations. In this blog we will delve into the three top picks from Cornwall.

Bodmin Moor, Cornwall

An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Bodmin Moor is a moody yet beautiful area of heather covered granite moorland. It boasts the highest point in Cornwall, Brown Willy, as well as a much sought after International Dark Sky Landscape designation. Bodmin Moor provides a stark contrast to the golden beaches and coves that tend to come to mind when Cornwall is mentioned.

To the south-west of Bodmin Moor is the historic town of Bodmin. Its striking granite buildings provide a tangible link back to the moor as well as reflecting the 19th century wealth of the town. If you are looking to commute, its position by the A30 and mainline railway are ideal. The town and wider moor is known for its excellent pubs, perfect after lengthy walk. The architecture of the town is characterised by stone cottages, gorgeous townhouses and Victorian semis and terraces. House prices in the area are more affordable than down by the Cornish coast.

Falmouth, Cornwall

On the south coast of Cornwall by the River Fal, Falmouth is one of Cornwall’s oldest ports and still retains deep working harbours. Unlike many of the UK’s coastal towns, Falmouth’s high street is still bustling as it is has one the lowest percentages of vacant shops in the country. National retailers sit comfortably alongside artisan shops. There are a number of award-winning restaurants and cafes to choose from, as well as the expected chains.

Festivals take place throughout the year, often with a focus on the waterfront. The town boasts four outstanding beaches which are excellent for watersport enthusiasts and families alike.

Falmouth University’s excellent reputation and creative specialism is a major draw for students. They help to give the town a vibrant feel and have kickstarted a burgeoning creative industry fuelled by various startups and art galleries. Local venues also regularly show independent films.

As well as three rail station, Falmouth also has good water transport connections with ferries regularly making the trip to Truro.

Wadebridge, Cornwall

Wadebridge acts as a hub for people looking to enjoy the rugged north coast of Cornwall, a favourite of the surfing community. The town has brilliant access to the Camel Cycle Trail and many choose to start their cycling adventure from this point. This beautiful trail follows the course of the disused North Cornwall train line and is also popular with walkers.

Despite becoming increasingly popular over the years, Wadebridge has remained true to character. Its high street currently boasts the highest number of independent shops in the country, easily accessible from the largely pedestrianised street. A local market takes place every Thursday.
