Devon and Cornwall are England’s two most South-Westerly counties and both have a rich history with individual identities. Both counties have transport links to London and the North via Road, Rail or Air. Devon has both a North and South Coast with seaside resorts, fishing villages and ports. Dartmoor National Park is the largest open space in southern England; made famous by Sherlock Holmes’ Hound of the Baskervilles.
The hills and moors drain into a number of rivers including the Tamar, Dart, Exe and Teign. The River Tamar is the boundary between Devon and Cornwall with Cornwall being famed for its long and varied coastline. From the heights of Bodmin Moor to the West Cornwall mining heritage area it is known for its geology. It is also home to Doc Martin and the popular Poldark series on TV. In fact, film producers from all over the world favour Cornwall because of the magical atmosphere it inspires.
Both Counties have numerous sought after small market towns and villages, whilst Plymouth, Exeter and Truro are the main commercial towns. The two counties offer a stunning blend of both coastal and countryside, anything from sailing to surfing, rambling to rock climbing and of course Cornish pasties to Devonshire cream teas! There’s something for everyone in the South West.
