Its origins may derive from its location on an ancient Pack-Horse Lane between Newhaven and London and the pure spring water found here by travellers, for which nearby Tunbridge Wells is more famous. Sandstone quarrying also generated growth into the 20th century. There are many historic buildings in the village e.g. the local church, All Saints on the village green and Manor Cottage, both of which are Grade II* listed.
