Property in Ely Cambridge Ely Ely is most famous for its cathedral – and rightly so. This huge 11th century masterpiece is surely the most breath-taking building in East Anglia, with detailing is hard to imagine until you see for yourself. Around the cathedral are some beautiful stone and flint buildings from a similar era, and the town’s main green space in Cathedral Park, whilst down at the banks of the River Great Ouse you’ll find a great spot to sit and observe the boating activity. The centre comprises two parallel streets which merge at the Market Place, with its lively twice-weekly market stalls. A small town, it nevertheless offers a decent range of facilities and shops; independent shops are strongly in evidence, and seem to thrive here based on a tight, loyal supporting community. Why choose Ely? Ely used to be an island until the surrounding fens were drained in the 17th century, and it can feel quite remote with the long, straight flat roads crossing the wetlands towards Peterborough, Cambridge and Newmarket; so it’s essential to get to know the town before buying or renting here since all your daily activities will be focused on the town. It’s well served for supermarkets (Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose) and local shops, but has less to offer culturally: for example The Maltings is the only (and small) venue for film and theatre. Schooling is good, particularly the private sector: Kings vies with the best schools in Cambridge. That city is easily reached by train in under 20 minutes and London direct in 75 minutes, but the A10 to Cambridge is frustratingly slow. The property market is fairly quiet and seasonal and finding the right property in Ely can be bought at good value if done carefully.
