The villages near Cambridge offer a slightly slower pace of life, surrounded by countryside whilst still being just a short distance from the city.

These are some of the villages near Cambridge for those looking to move home:

Grantchester

Perhaps best known for the TV series of the same name, Grantchester is a picturesque village just outside of Cambridge.

Whilst it’s close to the city, the village offers a tranquil environment for those looking to enjoy life in a smaller community.

Property for sale in Grantchester consists of many period properties with some more modern additions, buyers will find that homes rarely become available to buy as it is a small village, where people choose to live for many years.

The village boasts ample green spaces with Grantchester Recreation Ground and Grantchester Meadows along the River Cam.

Residents have ready access to several well-maintained cycling paths and walking routes so it’s a perfect spot for those who enjoy being outdoors.

There are several bus routes which connect Grantchester to central Cambridge, while those travelling by car will appreciate the proximity to the A14 and M11 motorways.

Bourn

The highly rated primary school and strong sense of community make Bourn particularly popular with families seeking villages near Cambridge to call home.

The Hemingfords

The Hemingfords are two neighbouring villages, Hemingford Grey and Hemingford Abbots, both of which are highly desirable places to live near Cambridge.   

Buyers will find charming period cottages dotted across the area, together with well-proportioned detached houses set within their land.

With much of both villages being within a conservation area there are many beautifully preserved buildings. Common Lane in Hemingford Abbot is a particularly desirable address and the location of many of the largest properties in the area.

In Hemingford Abbot, there is a popular 15th-century public house called The Axe and Compass which is known to serve traditional British pub food. The pub is positioned opposite the village hall where many a local event is held, and there’s also a children’s playground.

Just along the River Great Ouse, the neighbouring village of Hemingford Grey has an award-winning pub together with a village store and post office. There’s also a popular sports pavilion which has tennis and squash courts, a football pitch, and a play park.

Locals enjoy beautiful walks along the riverside between the villages and of course the annual Regatta and biennial Flower Festival.  

Houghton

A charming village near Cambridge, Houghton offers an ideal balance between country and city, being both within easy reach of Cambridge yet being tucked away in the Cambridgeshire countryside.

From the doorstep those who live in the village can enjoy many country walks. It’s popular to walk along the banks of the River Great Ouse and past the National Trust Houghton Mill which is within the village. Further afield walking routes take you across the meadow to the nearby The Hemingfords or Godmanchester.

There is a convenience store, tea shop, antique shop, pub and the well-regarded village primary school together with a pre-school, playing fields tennis courts; there really is a great selection of facilities in Houghton.

The village has excellent transport links, making it easy for commuters to reach Cambridge and of course, nearby Huntingdon station enables locals to reach London in under an hour.  

From Edwardian Arts and Crafts style homes to thatched 17th Century cottages, property for sale in Houghton is rich with history and incredibly diverse.

The Shelfords

Located just 4 miles from Cambridge, The Shelfords, consisting of Great Shelford and Little Shelford, are charming neighbouring villages, both sought-after places to live.

The Shelfords have an excellent selection of local facilities between them including a variety of shops including, a bakery and supermarkets, a primary school, a library, a health centre, recreation grounds, and tennis courts.

As with many of the villages near Cambridge, it is easy to reach the city by road and for those wishing to have access to Cambridge but also be able to reach London with ease, Whittlesford Parkway Station, around 3 miles to the south of The Shelfords, offers services to London’s Liverpool Street in around 1 hour.

Linton

Linton is a thriving village situated around 10 miles to the southeast of the city of Cambridge, on the Essex border, just 6 miles from Saffron Walden.

Linton is known for its idyllic countryside setting, the historic buildings that line Linton High Street and for being exceptionally well connected.

Linton has a wide range of facilities including a variety of local shops, public houses, a library, heath centre, a primary school and Linton Village College providing excellent secondary education, meaning residents are well catered for day-to-day. Linton even has its own zoo!

Comberton

Comberton is a highly sought-after village near Cambridge that is conveniently located for Cambridge city centre, top Cambridge schools, Addenbrooke’s Medical Centre and has convenient commuter links with the M11 close by.

The village is surrounded by undulating countryside allowing for numerous country walks and for cyclists there is an easy route onto the cycle path into central Cambridge.

Comberton has extensive facilities for a village, there is a local primary school together with the highly regarded Comberton Village College, where extensive leisure facilities can be booked. The village also has a number of local shops including a convenience store, butcher, dentist, hairdresser, and a village pub.
