Choosing The Best Place To Buy A Holiday Home In Devon

Closer to many than Cornwall, Devon is widely considered to be one of the best places to buy a holiday home in the UK. Its stunning coastline provides lots of opportunities for walking, watersports or simple relaxation. Away from the coast, inner Devon boasts two dramatically beautifully National Parks: Dartmoor and Exmoor. Thanks to its southern location, Devon receives some of the best summer weather in the country. On a clear day you can even see across to Wales and the Brecon Beacon from North Devon.

Devon has enough to offer that families will never be at a loss as what to do. There are numerous craggy coves to explore. Older couples can enjoy the delights of the vineyards, excellent restaurants and the odd cream tea. Remember, it’s clotted cream before jam in Devon!

Best Place To Buy A Holiday Home: The South Hams

One of the most picturesque areas of Devon, the South Hams is full of pretty coastal villages as well a few larger towns. Part of the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the beauty of the area is unspoilt.

Dartmouth

With its distinctive Elizabethan architecture and large number of independent shops, Dartmouth is a brilliant day out for a spot of shopping. Regular artisan and farmer’s markets are held in the Old Market Square, selling a wide variety of homemade or specialist products. If you’re looking for a unique gift to take home, we certainly recommend checking them out. Equally, you might find the perfect piece for your new holiday home.

The quayside is vibrant in both atmosphere and colour, with the buildings all beautifully painted in bold shades. Located on the River Dart, there is the opportunity for romantic boat trips and every August the town hosts an impressive regatta, perfect for anyone interested in sailing. If you prefer walking to being the water, the South West Coastal Path is close by.

Salcombe

Another gem in the South Hams crown is Salcombe, built on the side of the hill and overlooking the Kingsbridge Estuary. Its reputation is so great that house prices there are some of the highest prices outside London, in part due to the limited amount of land. Along the waterfront you can find a range of excellent shops, restaurants and cafes.

Sailing is a popular pursuit in Salcombe as the naturally sheltered harbour creates the perfect conditions for sailing. Novices need not worry as there are a number of local sailing schools. Powerboating, fishing and scuba diving are also offered in the area. Like Dartmouth, the town is on the South West Coastal Path.

Best Place To Buy A Holiday Home: Woolacombe

Located on the North Devon coast, Woolacombe is incredibly popular with watersports enthusiasts. The powerful waves of the Atlantic Ocean make it ideal for surfing and several surfing schools operate in the area, training children and adults alike. If you prefer a more relaxed approach to a holiday, you’ll be glad to know that Woolacombe Beach is consistently rated one of the best beaches in the UK.
